Hotel in Dubai, the largest city in the United Arab Emirates. The building stands 280 metres offshore on an artificial island connected to land by a bridge. At 321 metres, it was the tallest hotel in the world before the 333-metre Rose Tower opened in April 2008. The Burj el Arab is currently the 5th tallest hotel in the world, although 39% of its total height is unoccupied.

As of 2015, Burj el Arab is the 56th tallest building in Asia and the 70th tallest in the world.

Construction of the hotel began in 1994 and it opened to the public on 1 December 1999. The hotel was built in the form of a dhow sail, an Arabian ship (hence the hotel is often known colloquially as "The Sail"). At 210 metres, there is a helipad and on the other side is the El Muntaha Restaurant (Arabic for 'The Highest'), both supported by cantilevered beams.
