How safe is it to travel in Tanzania?

Tanzania is a safe country to travel in. Tanzanians are warm-hearted and generous people and are eager to help and assist visitors. As in all countries, a little common sense goes a long way and reasonable precautions should still be taken, such as locking valuables in the hotel safe, do not carry a lot of camera equipment especially in the major cities, do not wear too much jewellery, do not carry large amounts of cash on your person etc.

How safe is the water and food in Tanzania?

It is best to drink bottled water when travelling through Tanzania - numerous brands are widely available and served in all restaurants and lodges. Steer clear of ice, raw vegetables, and salads when eating at street restaurants. High-end lodges and restaurants will clean their produce in antiseptic solution, but to be on the safe side, fruit and vegetables should always be washed and peeled. Try to avoid eating in empty restaurants - the food may have been sitting out for some time - and order your meat well done.

Time in Tanzania?

Tanzania operates on East Africa Time (EAT), which is UTC+3. There is no daylight saving time in Tanzania.

What is the Tanzania currency?

The official currency of Tanzania is the Tanzanian Shilling, abbreviated as TZS.

The exchange rate between the Tanzanian Shilling and foreign currencies can fluctuate, so it's a good idea to check the current rate before you travel. Typically, US dollars, euros, and British pounds are easily exchanged into Tanzanian Shillings at banks, exchange offices, or even at many hotels.

Cash: Cash is widely used for most transactions in Tanzania, especially in smaller towns or when buying things from markets, street vendors, and taxis.

Cards: Credit and debit cards (Visa, MasterCard) are accepted in larger hotels, tourist areas, and some businesses in cities like Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar, but it's best to carry cash, especially if you're heading to more remote areas.

ATMs are widely available in major cities like Dar es Salaam, Arusha, and Zanzibar, but you may not find many in more rural areas, so it’s a good idea to carry enough cash with you if you're traveling outside the cities.

What is the best time to visit Tanzania?

The best time to visit Tanzania depends on what you want to do:

June to November is the dry season, making it the ideal time for safaris and visiting national parks.

December to March is also a good time for safaris, with warmer temperatures and the start of the Great Migration in the Serengeti.

April to May is the rainy season, so it’s the least popular time for visitors.

What should I pack for a trip to Tanzania?

Pack light, breathable clothing for hot weather, and bring:

Comfortable shoes for walking and safaris.A hat and sunglasses for sun protection.

Light layers for evenings (it can get cool at night, especially in the highlands).

A light rain jacket if traveling in the rainy season. Insect repellent (for protection against malaria in certain regions). Sunscreen is essential for sunny days.

Is there Wi-Fi in Tanzania?

Yes, Wi-Fi is available in larger cities, hotels, and some cafes. However, the connection can be unreliable in remote areas like national parks or on safari. Consider buying a local SIM card with data for better connectivity while traveling.

What plug types are in Tanzania?

Plug Type: The standard plug type in Tanzania is Type G (three rectangular prongs in a triangular pattern).

Other types: Type D and M plugs are also used, but Type G is the most common.
