Before You Ask – It’s Probably Here (FAQ)

Do I need a visa for Morocco?

It depends on your nationality.

• Chinese citizens — Visa-free for up to 90 days
• US & Canadian citizens — Visa-free for up to 90 days
• Australian citizens — Generally visa-free for up to 90 days • Most European citizens — Visa-free for up to 90 days

For other nationalities, check with your nearest Moroccan consulate before traveling.

What documents do I need at the border?

• Passport — Must be valid for at least 3-6 months beyond your planned departure date (requirements vary; 6 months recommended)
• Return ticket — Proof of onward/return travel (not always checked but recommended)
• Accommodation details — Address of your first night's stay
• Sufficient funds — Credit card and some cash for your stay

What currency is used in Morocco?

The Moroccan Dirham (MAD) — a closed currency that cannot be obtained outside Morocco . Exchange your money after arrival.

Should I use cash or cards?

While hotels, large restaurants, and supermarkets accept cards, cash is essential for:
• Souks and markets (cards almost never accepted)
• Taxis (always negotiate fare before getting in)
• Small restaurants and street food
• Rural areas and mountain villages
• Tips (see tipping guide below)
• Where is the best place to get cash?
ATMs are your best option — they offer the best exchange rates and are widely available in cities (Marrakech, Fes, Casablanca, Tangier)

What should I wear in Morocco?

Morocco is Muslim and conservative, but also understanding of Western visitors — modesty is the key.

For women:
• Loose, long pants or maxi dresses
• Shoulders covered (pack a pashmina or light scarf) • Avoid low-cut tops and short shorts
• Wearing a Moroccan kaftan or jellabah is appreciated but not required

For men:
• Collared shirt or T-shirt covering shoulders
• Long pants (not shorts outside beach settings)
• Beachwear is for the beach only — wearing it elsewhere is considered inappropriate

What about alcohol?

Avoid drinking alcohol in public places — it's culturally insensitive and can cause offense . Alcohol is available at hotels, some restaurants, and licensed bars, but public intoxication is illegal and can lead to arrest.

What about taxis?

Always negotiate the fare before getting in (meters are rarely used with tourists)
• Have small bills ready — drivers often claim they have no change
• Petit taxis (small, usually red) operate within cities
• Grand taxis (older Mercedes) are for inter-city or airport trips

What Morocco Electricity Type?

Type C (Europlug): 2 round pins
Type E (French standard): 2 round pins with a grounding hole

Most modern electronic devices (laptops, phone chargers, tablets, cameras) are dual voltage (100-240V, 50/60Hz). Check the label on your charger — if it says "100-240V", you only need a plug adapter, not a voltage converter.
